Originating from Montana in the United States, Ryan LaBar studied biology and art before working for numerous institutions as a resident artist, including the Archie Bray Foundation, LH Projets, and California State University. His projects extend beyond American borders, reaching China, Korea, and Poland.
In 2014, Ryan left his homeland and moved to the Jingdezhen province in China, where he established LabArts, his personal workshop and innovation center.
Located in the historic city of China’s imperial porcelain, the artist works with porcelain to create sculptures with abstract volumes of intertwining curves. With this approach, Ryan LaBar reappropriates ancient craftsmanship to design imposing wall installations and freestanding sculptures where movements and tensions rhythmically shape the form. He views these forms as complex systems, charged yet balanced at the same time.
For Ryan LaBar, his creative process forms the very foundation of his concept: the shapes he creates bring together individual elements that, through communication and interweaving, impact the form of the whole they compose.
Today, Ryan LaBar is celebrated as a prolific artist, whose pieces have become part of significant private and public collections, and he continues his meticulous production in the heart of the historical epicenter of porcelain of the past two centuries.
